Adventure Racing Equipment - Top 10 things you Need to Win
Different events would require different adventure racing equipment. There is some adventure racing equipment that you must have for personal purposes and others for team use. It's always better to know the event before entering; take all the information that you can on what to expect from the race - asking the organizers is the best way to go. Nevertheless, here is the top 10 list (in no particular order of importance) of the most important adventure racing equipment that your team would need to have to claim that 1st prize.
- First aid kit: Safety should always get top priority in adventure racing equipments. A team should have at least one kit even if you are the toughest bunch of adventure racers out there. Make sure that you get a kit that is designed specifically for adventure racing.
- Water containers: You would have to always keep yourself and your team hydrated. Water is very important and you should regularly take in small amounts of water. Make sure that you get the containers that are ergonomically designed, for ease and convenience of carrying around.
- Cooking stove, pots and utensils: A lot of times, adventure races can take 3-6 days to complete and so you would have to carry cooking equipment and cooking utensils. Food and proper nutrition during the adventure race is vital for a win because many times, teams try overdoing it by not eating. Not only is this not good for their health, but a lot of times they would just drop out on the 4th or 5th day due to excessive fatigue. A good team knows how to balance out work and rest.
- Tents or sleeping bags: It is best to carry those multi-purpose knapsack/sleeping bags because you would not have to carry two things at once, although you would have to rearrange everything back into position every morning. Try and get those weatherproof and lightweight sleeping bags for adventure racing.
- Mountain bike: Not all races provide bikes, so you would have to bring your own for those stages that require one.
- Mountain bike roof rack: You will have to place your bike somewhere when not in use.
- Support vehicle: The more challenging races would require a support crew with a support vehicle. In those races, there is absolutely no chance of winning without a supporting cast. Never overestimate your abilities and use every type of help you can find if it's allowed within the competition.
- Flashlights: Sometimes night navigation is required and needless to say, you would definitely need a flashlight or two. Better get the headlamps for convenience.
- Compass and map: You would reach nowhere near the finish line if you go the wrong way. Get at least one map and a map protector. Also, get a compass that is embedded on a wrist watch so that you would have your hands free at all times.
- Small items: Ropes, whistles, duct tape and Swiss knives are other very useful essentials to add to your adventure racing kit; you never know when you might need them.

Event Reports
Raid the North Extreme (RTNX)
Raid the North Extreme (RTNX) has been selected as a qualifier for the 2011 Adventure Racing (AR) World Series. The internationally acclaimed expedition race will happen July 23 to 31, 2011, in the rugged and historic West Kootenays of BC.
Four-person co-ed teams will travel 6 days non-stop, navigating a 500km+ unmarked expedition course through the Selkirk, Monashee and Purcell mountain ranges in BC’s West Kootenays by foot, canoe, kayak, mountain bike and fixed ropes.
“As one of the oldest and most traditional expedition races around, we’re very excited to have RTNX back on board,” AR World Series director Craig Bycroft said. “This historic North American race truly rounds out our world-wide series of top quality races.”
RTNX was one of the founding members of the ARWS when it was created with Discovery Channel in 2000, and it served as the World Championship event in 2004. Since then, RTNX had not participated in the Series.
The AR World Series is an international circuit of the world’s best adventure races and culminates annually in the Adventure Racing World Championship, hosted by a different member race each year.
“We’re thrilled to be part of the family of AR World Series qualifier events again,” said Geoff Langford, Race Director of Raid the North Extreme. “The AR World Championship in Tasmania this November has garnered unprecedented attention and registrations, and we’re lucky to be offering a paid entry to that event.
"Raid the North Extreme is already approaching sold-out status of 50 teams, so this news is likely to motivate existing teams to firm up their spot, and to gain the attention of top teams who don’t yet have paid or confirmed ARWC entries.
The current RTNX roster reflects the international nature of the AR World Series, with the US and Canada well-represented, and teams registered from Australia, Mexico, Ireland, Switzerland and St Martin.
Frontier first hosted Raid the North Extreme (“RTNX”) in 1999, and it is now one of the world's longest-running and most recognized expedition-length adventure races. Renowned for its focus on real wilderness, real navigation, and real adventure, RTNX is a traditional wilderness adventure race.
“RTNX is, and has always been, a hard-core traditional expedition race,” said Langford. “We design true point to point courses that traverse the landscape as an early explorer would have. Competitors will have to deal with exhaustion, weather, elevation and anything else Nature will offer up that week. There’s a good chance they won’t finish this race. This is not a scavenger hunt or a day hike; this is real, challenging expedition racing.
” Raid the North Extreme is more than a challenging wilderness expedition; the race has always served as a platform to highlight the host region’s history, character and communities. The rich mining and pioneer spirit of the area will capture the imagination of racers as they experience abandoned railway trestles and tunnels, dormant volcanoes, old mining access trails and ghost towns.

Peak Fuel and Stirling Sports
Along with adequate hydration we cannot stress enough the importance of sustaining your energy levels throughout the 21kms. We highly recommend PEAK FUEL energy gels which are easy to use, easily absorbed and provide all the goodies you need to sustain those energy levels. The team from PEAK FUEL will be at registration with some sharp deals and to offer advice to those seeking it.
STIRLING SPORTS are our sports apparel partners this year and are located directly across the road from Harcourts. So, you can stock up on socks, caps, thermatech, shell jackets or anything you may need there. Stirling Sports also stock the Asics Trabuco Trail, which are my favourite off road running shoes (ideal for the terrain in the Saint Clair Half Marathon). See the team at Stirling Sports if you’d like a fitting.
Finishing Toast
This year we’re amping things up with the addition of the finishing toast party. A celebration for all who participated, supported and enjoyed the event.
